Euro area inflation hits record high of 5.1% in January

Energy has highest annual rate last month with 28.6%, according to preliminary Eurostat data

Annual euro area inflation hit a new record high of 5.1% in January, according to a flash estimate of preliminary data from Eurostat on Thursday.

The figure, above market forecasts of 4.4%, was up from 5% in December 2021, said the estimate from the European Union’s statistics agency.

Energy is projected to have the highest annual rate last month with 28.6%, up from 25.9% a month ago.

Next comes food, alcohol and tobacco with 3.6% inflation in January, services with 2.4%, and non-energy industrial goods with 2.3%.
