The Eastleigh-based crime buster was ordered to surrender to the Garissa Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) offices. Warrant of arrest Failure to do so, the DCI said they would issue a warrant of arrest against him, according to Tuko reported.

On Thursday, January 26, Rashid was expected to take plea for the alleged murder of two men. Judge Kanyi Kimondo presiding over the matter postponed the plea taking by Rashid to February 9, 2023. After he surrenders to the Garissa Township DCIO, he will be escorted to Mathare Teaching and Referral Hospital for a medical/psychiatric examination.

Dreaded police officer Until recently, the officer whose name sent shivers down the spines of many residents of Mathare, Eastleigh and Pangani areas, remained seemingly untouchable. In November 2022, Rashid, the leader of the Pangani six requested the court to protect him from prosecutors and civil societies looking to prefer murder charges against him.

The Independent Policing and Oversight Authority (IPOA) received a go-ahead from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution to press charges against Rashid.

In a viral video, Rashid is seen shooting a young man in the middle of the road on 4th Eastleigh Street as the crowd watched in amazement. Activists and interest groups told him off for seeking to block his prosecution and urged him to allow the court to put him under trial.

Ahmed Rashid defends himself Rashid filed a petition through his lawyers at the High Court in Milimani, seeking an order to stop the planned prosecution slated for December 8.

In his defence, the police officer said he was in the line of duty and pulled the trigger to protect his life. Rashid also claimed that there was a sinister motive because IPOA summoned him to provide statements on an incident that happened six years ago. He said that there was a bad motive and a well-choreographed plan to fix him without any legal basis.

Over the past six years, Rashid disclosed that he had never received any invite from the IPOA to give an account.
