Somalia has not had a prime minister for 35 days, nor has there been a formal government as the country. In a week’s time, President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo appointed the first prime minister, who was discredited by parliament at the end of last month, but it is now clear that the president does not want to nominate a successor until the next election.

According Villa Somalia sources told Somali Times President Farmajo held a private meeting with Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Mursal last night and persuaded him to give him more time to nominate his second prime minister.

The speaker and his deputy are known to be political allies of President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo, and are understood to have worked together to overthrow Hassan Khaire government. It is unclear whether the agreement between the two will be presented to parliament and whether it will be a special one in which the President will briefly appoint a prime minister to form a permanent government.

The president usually needs to appoint a new prime minister within 30 days, but there is no constitutional provision or law which makes it mandatory.
