Somalia’s outgoing parliament behind Farmajo’s two-year extension holds US, EU and UK passports and may face sanctions.

The outgoing parliament convened on April 12th 2021 to extend Farmajo’s term by two years, with opposition from the Upper House, regional administrations, the National Salvation Forum, civil society and even the international community, led by Europe, United States and the UK rejected their extension plan.

The list of MPs who submitted and signed the election direction motion was obtained.

The list obtained shows the total number of signatures to the motion, the number of women, the number of other nationalities and the states of origin, as follows:

1.The number is only 41.

2.The list is as long as 50% of women have signed on to show that Farmajo used women in the minority of the Lower House.

3.18% of lawmakers hold US and European passports and may face sanctions.

4.According to the regional administrations, the MPs who filed the motion are as follows:

Jubaland (7), South West (14), Hirshabelle (3), Galmudug (3), Puntland (2) and Somaliland (11).

According to the outgoing speaker of the House of Representatives, the resolution was approved by 149 members of parliament.
