Somaliland Government on Saturday officially has revoked the construction at the site of a proposed new UAE military base. The President of Somaliland, Musa Bihi Abdi has made the announcement whilst visiting in the port city of Berbera. He said that his government has canceled the deal whereby the former Somaliland president Ahmed Silanyo gave the UAE the building of a military base in the port city of Berbera.

The objective of the UAE was to use the airport for an airbase whereby the military planes belonging to the coalition forces that are engaged battles in Yemen could use it for carrying out air raid against the Houthi rebels in the war torn country of Yemen. The cancellation of the UAE takeover of Berbera airport will be a huge success for Somaliland as this would appease the critics of the ex-administration, which presided over the handover of the military base in the UAE. The granting of the military base in the UAE caused an outcry in Somaliland, where majority has opposed the govt move.
