UN Security Council backs Somalia’s unity and criticises Israel’s actions

The members of the United Nations Security Council have expressed their full support for the people, territory and political unity of Somalia.

The members of the United Nations Security Council have expressed their full support for the people, territory and political unity of Somalia, just days after Israel recognized the self-proclaimed Hargeisa administration as an independent state.

In a heated debate, most members of the Security Council, including countries with influence in international politics, expressed their support for the unity of Somalia.

The Deputy US Ambassador to the United Nations, Tammy Bruce, said that the US policy towards Somalia has not changed.

The ambassador added that Israel has the right to establish relations with whom it wishes, “that Israel has the right to establish diplomatic relations, as every sovereign state has the right to do”.

In his speech, the British ambassador confirmed that his country reaffirms its support for the unity, territorial and political independence of Somalia, as he put it.

Somalia, represented by Algeria, Guyana and Sierra Leone, strongly condemned Israel’s recognition of Hargeisa administration, calling it a “blatant violation” of the unity and sovereignty of its territory.

“Any step towards the recognition of Hargeisa administration is null and void, any step towards the recognition of Somaliland is null and void,” said Somalia’s ambassador to the United Nations, Abukar Bale.

Djibouti’s UN representative said the decision by the Jewish administration was “deeply irresponsible” and “unnecessary at this time,” according to his statement.

“This decision is a direct violation of recognized international norms and principles of law. Israel’s irresponsible decision is a flagrant violation of the Charter of the United Nations, a flagrant violation of the Council’s authority, and a threat to the pillars of the international legal order,” said the Djibouti envoy.

The Turkish ambassador described Israel’s move as a direct threat to a member of the Arab League and to the security of the African continent as a whole.

“It creates instability in the Horn of Africa, and significantly undermines the security of the integrated Arab and African region. Israel’s announcement is another example of the Netanyahu government’s illegal actions aimed at creating instability, both regionally and internationally.”

On the other hand, the Permanent Representative of the League of Arab States who spoke at the event accused Israel of “aiming at this decision to displace the Palestinians living in Gaza”.

“Israel seeks to use this as a pretext to illegally occupy Somalia territory, advancing well-known political, security and economic agendas, which are unacceptable and condemned.”
