Aden Duale’s woes deepen as Jubilee Party convenes meeting to discuss his fate

National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale is still a marked man despite surviving a series of Jubilee Party’s purge on errant and disloyal members. Ahead of a parliamentary group meeting scheduled for next week, Duale’s critics in the party have hinted at his imminent removal from the powerful position he has been holding since 2013.

Speaking to Citizen TV on Friday, June 19, Jubilee Party Vice Chairman David Murathe said Duale had fallen out by majority of the party members hence his downfall was imminent. “If you fall out with majority of members of the party then you have no business calling yourself a majority leader. During the last meeting we had at State House, the president confirmed changes and status quo in all the position except that of the majority leader which he skipped. He should ask himself why? said Murathe, a trusted ally of the president.

Duale’s deputy Jimmy Angwenyi was retained while Kipipiri MP Amos Kimunya was appointed secretary of the Jubilee Coalition Joint Parliamentary Group.

Speaking after the nervous meeting, Aden downplayed claims that he had survived the purge saying he had been involved in an accident. However, a section of Jubilee MPs particularly those allied to Kieleweke faction hinted the Garrisa Township lawmaker was not out of the woods yet. A few days later, Kieni MP Kanini Kega began the process of collecting signatures to impeach Duale from the position of the majority leader.

The move rattled a section of leaders from the North-Eastern region led by Senator Yusuf Haji to plead with the president and Jubilee Party to spare Duale, noting he has been loyal to the party and was one of the few leaders from the region privileged to serve in such a powerful position. Reports indicated Kega was advised to abandon the cause to impeach Duale and leave it for the party to handle. With a meeting scheduled next week, Murathe said the removal of Duale from the office of the majority leader would one of the top agendas.
