The Somali Government Threatens Journalists to Refrain From Reporting

Politician Dahir Mohamud Gelle, who has served twice as the Somali minister of information, spoke about the situation in the country, particularly on the level of freedom of the free press and the current state of affairs in Somalia.

The former Minister of Information, now one of the country’s most influential politicians from the government led by President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo, said that, When I faced a low level of scrutiny, the media/independent media are now at a much lower level than they were before.’ Former president of Somalia Abdiqasim Salad Hassan was appointed to the government of the Republic of Djibouti, especially in Arta.

At that time there was civil war in Somalia, and the journalists were not able to cover the stories they needed. Politician Dahir Gelle said, ‘If the press is under pressure, Somalia will prepare an election between the end of 2020 and in the beginning of 2021. This will make the election unfair.’ says Gelle.

In Somalia, there has been a growing trend of journalists, with most journalists being arrested, while others have fled the country and the Somali government has repeatedly failed to respond to media and human rights organizations.
