Samsung’s Radical Galaxy Smartphone Costs $2,000

The Galaxy Note 9 has some significant upgrades, but it has lost its headline feature and will be an incremental update at best. The reason is that Samsung is working on something far more exciting and now we know it will also be far more expensive…

Early next year Samsung will unveil the so-called ‘Galaxy X’, the world’s first smartphone to feature a folding display. It has the potential to change the smartphone world, but a new report reveals the price of this change could be almost $2,000.
Kim Jang-yeol, head of research at Golden Bridge Investment, breaks the bad news stating the final price of the foldable phone will be approximately 2 million won ($1,850).
Even if Samsung cuts the price for the US market (and there isn’t much difference between Samsung phones in the two countries), there is no way this phone will be anything other than eye-wateringly expensive.
If you are prepared to live on the cutting edge, however, you will own a phone like no other.

Kim confirms previous leaks stating the folding Galaxy will have a massive 7.3-inch OLED display which is reduced to just 4.5-inches when the display is folded. In addition, Samsung is expected to use “artificial muscle” technology in its components so they move in sync with the screen to protect them.

For its part, Samsung remains bullish.

Koh Dong-jin, Samsung’s president of mobile, previously confirmed the device and that the company is working on a release date. Meanwhile, Samsung spokesman Kim Choon-gon boasts development remains on track for a device with a “true foldable display”.Adding meat to these bones is Shinhan Financial analyst Park Hyung-woo who states: “Parts affiliates and first-tier subcontractors will begin supplying parts to Samsung Electronics’ handset division beginning in November”. Prototypes will then be shown-off to mobile carriers at CES in January, he adds.

Park also has more information on the design, revealing “This new device is an interesting thing as it will have two inside panels and one outside panel with the two inside panels forming the 7.3-inch screen when the phone is unfolded.”With Apple set to crank up the pressure on Samsung this year with three new iPhone X models and some massive price cuts, it looks like the Korean company has kept its powder dry in 2018 in order to come out all guns blazing in 2019…
