Somalia journalists have convened a meeting organized by the Somali Journalists Association, demanding the release of Kilwe Adan Farah. Kilwe, a journalist, was arrested 21 days ago in the Garowe town of Somalia, for reporting on inflation in the town.
The secretary of the Somali Journalists Association, Abdalla Ahmed Mumin, who first spoke to the media, said that the arrest of the journalist was illegal.
“First of all, I want to point out that it is illegal to detain a person for 21 days, without a lawyer, without seeing his family, without knowing whether the allegations are true or false based on any evidence.”
“We know that Kilwe was arrested a day after a public protest in Garowe over inflation, which is a constitutional right for the public to voice their grievances and for journalists to cover the public’s grievances.”
“It is ironic that he was detained for 21 days and some reports indicate that he was tortured following allegations leveled against him by the Puntland military court, which were not made in writing to Kilwe. His family was not informed and his lawyer was not shared according to the law.”
Meanwhile, reporters from participating in the demonstration with the Governor of the Puntland administration and called for the immediate release of the detained journalist Kilwe Farah Aden.
