According to sources, Villa Somalia told Somali Times there has been a delayed election in Somalia’s previously announced 2020-2021 election timetable, following an agreement reached in Mogadishu between the central government, regional governments and the Benadir region.

As planned today, in November 1, the process of selecting, preparing delegates and polling stations was set to begin, but there appears to be a delay in the plan and the timetable announced. It was also agreed on October 10-20 to appoint an electoral commission, but it was delayed, and the commission has not yet been announced, although regional administrations have finalized the members to represent the electoral commission and to dispute the resolution at the federal and state levels.

The delays are due to President Farmajo extension plan, but the latest election efforts by the Roble government are underway. The plan is also to hold Upper House elections on December 1st and 10th, while parliamentary elections will take place on December 10th and 27th.

Elections for both the House of Representatives and the presidency will take place from January 1 to February 8, 2021.

However, political analysts as well as the leadership of the country’s opposition parties warn against anything that could delay or derail the agreed timetable for Somalia’s 2020/2021 elections.
