The President of Puntland Said Abdullahi Deni is about to get an extension from the members of the House of Representatives, before the elections scheduled for January 2024.

Reliable sources told Somali Times say the number of Puntland parliamentarians who are advocating for the extension of the term of government institutions, especially the president, is increasing.

Members of the Kaah party in Said Deni’s government have been campaigning for the extension of the government’s term in parliament.

Also, the number of members joining this campaign is gradually increasing after various promises have been made to win their votes.

The news adds that a motion will soon be prepared to approve a two-year extension to the government, which will confirm the cancellation of the presidential election in January 2024.

The President of Puntland Said Deni is believed to be behind this issue even though he said in early August that the election will be held on time.

“We will hold the election on January 8, 2024, we have 5 months to do something,” said President Deni in a speech at the time.

“The government council are telling the people of Puntland that we hope or are ready to hold the election in time. We have no desire to increase. We know the problem we have. The president does not speak. It was said that I spoke to you today. I want to 8 January to participate in party elections,” he said.

This move could lead to a resurgence of the political tension in Puntland due to the election dispute, which has already caused wars in Garowe town.
