Tension remains in Jigjiga town due to fear

Residents in Jigjiga, the administrative capital of the Ethiopian Somali regional, state says many families fled their house due to the escalating tension in the eastern city. The situation remains tense as the Federal military forces are still controlling the town’s main streets and the local government buildings, including the parliament house.

There have been attempts to de-escalate the tension and restore the law and order in the Somali inhabited towns in the region as a new regional president assumes office. Dozens of people were killed, and many wounded during the violence which flared up after the Ethiopian Defense forces wrested control of Jigjiga earlier this week amid deadlock.
