The Somali government seized the money from the UAE border between Somalia and Kenya

Somali government officials on the border between Somalia and Kenya said they have arrested two men who were carrying money which came from the United Arab Emirates.

Government officials said the number of people arrested was two men and the money they were carrying, although they did not say how much money was seized. The Beled-Hawo district police commander told Somali Times that the money was intended to disrupt Somalia’s elections.

Abdullahi Abdi said security forces operating on the border between Somalia and Kenya are on high alert and ready to prevent any threat to the country’s security. There are no independent sources confirming the claims of government officials on the Somali-Kenyan border. The United Arab Emirates has not yet commented on the allegations made by the Somali government and the amount of money seized.

The Somali government said in April 2018 that it had seized funds from the United Arab Emirates at Mogadishu’s Aden Adde International Airport, which had strained relations between the two countries, and the UAE had suspended its training. The Somali forces also closed a free medical hospital in Mogadishu.
