United Nations Mission in Somalia office has been given an extension by the UN Security Council




The United Nations Security Council has extended until 31 October 2024 the duration of the United Nations Mission in Somalia (UNSOM).

Resolution No. 2705, which was jointly approved by the 15 members of the Security Council, requests the office of UNSOM to continue to maintain and strengthen its presence in Somalia, and the cooperation of the African Union.

UNSOM is encouraged to coordinate the efforts of the United Nations and support the Federal Government and the member governments of the Federation, in accelerating the implementation of the National Stabilization Strategy and peace building.

UNSOM was established in June 2013 to support government building and peace in Somalia.

Recently, the UNSOM office confirmed that the departure of ATMIS will not affect their presence in Somalia.

On the other hand, the Security Council also strongly condemned the obstruction of humanitarian aid, and the targeting of health workers.

The Security Council was recently briefed on individuals involved in the violence in Las Anod, including the targeting of civilians, health facilities, and health workers.
