United Nations Security Council officially lifted arms embargo Somalia




The United Nations Security Council officially lifted the long-standing arms embargo on Somalia, the Somali government described this decision as an important step forward.

After many years of Somalia’s efforts to lift the sanctions, the Security Council has finally decided to lift the sanctions, after a vote that took place today.

14 countries in the Security Council have agreed to lift the arms embargo on Somalia, but one country has remained silent.

The government of Somalia said that the lifting of the arms embargo plays an important role in rebuilding its armed forces, protecting the national defense, and paving the way for a peaceful and secure future.

“The end of sanctions represents an opportunity for Somalia to address its security challenges.” said the envoy, adding that Somalia will ensure that measures are taken to prevent weapons from falling into the hands of armed groups.

The lifting of the arms embargo in Somalia will open the doors for the federal government of Somalia to purchase modern weapons, which will play a role in the war against Al-Shabab.

The President of Somalia Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud, has requested the United Nations Security Council several times in the past to lift the arms embargo on Somalia.
