US coronavirus deaths top 190,000

More than 6.3M infection cases, 2,3M recoveries recorded, according to Johns Hopkins University

Coronavirus-related fatalities in the US surged beyond 190,000 Wednesday, according to a running tally of Johns Hopkins University. The Maryland-based university counted 190,478 deaths and 6,334,158 confirmed infections, while 2,359,111 people have recovered from the disease since it appeared in the US. The US continues to be the worst-hit country by the virus since overtaking China, with the highest number of deaths and cases. It is followed by India and Brazil.

A forecasting model the White House has relied on predicted Friday that fatalities in the US might hit 410,451 by Jan. 1. The model by Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), an independent research center at the University of Washington, said easing safety measures could drag the country to a worst-case scenario of 620,028 deaths.

California, Texas and Florida are the states with the current highest tallies in the country.
