What’s the interest of countries discussing Somalia support in Doha?

In a statement published on the website of the government of Qatar, it said that it will hold a meeting of the United States, Britain, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and Somalia, which will discuss how to support Somalia.

In this preliminary meeting that took place in Washington DC, the plan that will be discussed in this meeting is expected to be held three months later in the city of Doha.

The topics that will be focused on in the meeting are said to be one of the ways to support Somalia in the fight against Al-Shabab terrorist group.

So the question many Somali people are asking themselves is, what is in the interest of these countries in helping Somalia.

If we look back at the relations between these countries in Somalia.

The government of Qatar has long been a friend and helper of the government of Somalia. In the last five years, it has implemented projects in Somalia – including the road connecting Mogadishu, Balcad and Afgoye.

Qatar has also taken hundreds of young people as laborers from Somalia, some of them for military work.

The United Arab Emirates has been helping Somalia for some time in security matters. It trained troops in Somalia and paid their salaries, even though the camp they had in Mogadishu was closed by the Farmajo government after a diplomatic dispute between them.

The United States, Britain and Turkey were the first to support Somalia in terms of troops and the fight against Al-Shabaab. They are also one of the largest donors of international aid to Somalia.




Why are these countries so interested Somalia?

The Gulf countries have been known for a long-standing diplomatic dispute. Qatar and the United Arab Emirates have been at loggerheads for some time.

The former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Somalia, Ahmed Isse Awad, thinks that the conflict between these countries is decreasing, after the visits of the princesses of Qatar and the UAE.

“It was not a year ago that the Emir of the UAE, Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed, would visit Qatar. The Emir of Qatar responded by visiting the UAE. Also Saudi Arabia which was part of block of Qatar Arab nations,” said Awad while speaking to the BBC.

Issues that will also be focused on in this meeting include how to remove the arms embargo from Somalia.

They said that these governments will help Somalia to achieve international arms control.

Somalia has many resources oil fisheries and minerals that is what they interested this countries.
