Who is pastor Joy Isa, who created controversy in Somali society?

Pastor Joy Isa, president of Barwaqo University in Hargeisa, is a Nigerian woman, a doctoral student at the College of Education, a principal of several schools and an experienced Christian pastor.

Isa’s comments took over social media after Abdimalik Muse Oldon, identified as an evangelical preacher, sparked a controversy over Isa’s presence in Somaliland, for that reason Oldon was imprisoned.

Pastor Joy Isa is currently the president of Barwaqo University’s girls’ school, a branch of Abarso School, and has run American and British schools in Nigeria, headquartered in Charlotte, USA.

Suspicions of Isa’s intentions in Somaliland have skyrocketed after a post on Elevation Church’s Twitter account during her visit to Somaliland, stated that Isa had come to Somaliland to convert people to Christianity.

“We pray for Pastor Tunji who will be working on a new part of the church in the UK, and Joy Isa, who is going to Somaliland for evangelism. May God make it easier for her and strengthen the name of Jesus (Jesus),” the church said.

Following the outcry against Isa on social media, the church issued another statement today stating that the previous statement that Isa was coming to Somaliland for religious missions was a misinterpretation and had never worked in the church.

Some students at Barwaqo University say they have not seen Isa talk about religion or Christianity, but often talk about being free, working and seeking the rights they lack.

Public skepticism about Isa’s work is being felt on social media, although the Somaliland leaders has defended the Abarso school as a whole and said people with other motives are spreading rumors. Isa left Egal Airport this afternoon, according to sources.
