Kenyan President William Ruto has said that the African Union cannot handle dealing with African affairs after more than 60 years of existence.

William Ruto, who assumed the presidency in September 2022, regretted that the African Union could not even fund 85 million dollars for the reconstruction of Somalia.

Ruto said that poor African countries such as Somalia should wait for the support of other parties such as the European Union.

”We really need to question the AU administration. Today we cannot even support Somalia. We are waiting for the EU to give us $85M. It’s crazy. Are you telling me that 54 countries, 60 years after their independence, can’t manage $85M to support Somalia.” said Ruto.

Kenyan President William Ruto has called for changes in the structure of the African Union to deal independently with the challenges of the continent.

“Peacekeeping operations in Somalia are dependent on foreign funding. The government of Mogadishu depends on the grants and loans received from developed countries,” said William Ruto.

Regional leaders met earlier this week in Kampala, where they stressed the need for the African Union Commission to consider leveraging the African Union’s peace fund to support Somalia’s long-term security capacity building.
