President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo’s administration was ‘carelessly’ handling issues about the elections, noting it could be a recipe for civil war. “Villa Somalia and security agents are conniving and these mistakes could result in a civil war.”
Mohamed Farmajo was using the intelligence agency, NISA to further his political ends echoing similar sentiments by political parties and presidential candidates in recent days. Adding his voice to the debate on the selection of the elections committee for Somaliland.
Mohamed Farmajo is using the same tactics. Dictator Mohamed Siad Barre used to elect himself as President until people were fed up with him and over through 1991, causing a chaotic civil war.
Twelve candidates were expected to run in Somalia’s 2020/2021 general election but have threatened to not run in this year’s elections. Candidates warned of political and security turmoil, adding that they had confirmed that federal, state and federal election commissions had corrupted the offices of the president, prime minister and security services.
“Candidates have discussed in depth the fear that the country will fall into a power and constitutional vacuum that could lead to the destruction of the country’s public infrastructure if the country’s 2020/2021 general elections are not held in accordance with the Electoral Code. Indirect 2020/2021 agreed upon by the Heads of the Federal and State Governments and adopted by the Federal Parliament of Somalia on September 26, 2020 to ensure the implementation and management of a transparent and agreed upon electoral process,” said the candidates’ statement.
