Kenya and Somalia have reached an agreement on miraa

Miraa-Khat is a drug scientifically known as Catha Edulis and contains chemicals that stimulate blood circulation causing blood pressure. It also inhibits digestive enzymes and stops appetite. It creates hallucination, fantasy and uninterrupted talks. Together with all those harmful effects, it also causes family mental health problems.

The Minister of Agricultural Development of Kenya, MKithika Linturi, has announced that Kenya will sign an agreement with Somalia on the Miraa, to ensure what he called permanent economic benefits and to find a legal framework for the Miraa business.

Mr. Linturi noted that cash crops are the backbone of the Meru economy, which he said contributes greatly to the lives of people living in the Meru region of Kenya.

Linturi, who is from Meru province, said that the two countries are ready to sign this agreement. In particular, he said that the agreement will be signed on May 8, 2024.

This news comes at a time when Kenya is making efforts to re-invigorate the Miraa business that is exported to Somalia.

Kenyan businessmen are complaining that high taxes are being levied on Miraa exported to Somalia, which they say has hampered their business.
