Marian Abdi Hussein, a woman from Somalia, has made history by becoming the first Somali to become a member of the Norwegian parliament. Marian Abdi became the first Muslim woman to appear in the Norwegian parliament wearing a hijab after joining the council.

Prior to her political career, Marian was chairman of the Somali Students Federation (SSF), and was one of its founding members, including former Somali Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire.

Marian said she was involved in politics because of the circumstances of her community and the general public and that she believed she could do something about it if she now won a seat in parliament.

In a statement issued by the former Prime Minister of Somalia, Hassan Khaire congratulated Marian Abdi Hussein on her victory, as she became the first Somali member of the Norwegian parliament.

“New parliamentarian and all Somalis in Norway, congratulations on Marian historic victory,” former Somali Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire said in a statement on his Twitter account.
