The United Nations has congratulated the people of Puntland for the peaceful elections held by one person and one vote in the Nugal region, especially in the districts of Garowe, Dangoroyo and Godobjiran.
A press release from the UN said that Puntland’s experience in direct elections can play a major role in democracy in Somalia as a whole.
Puntland has become the first regional government in Somalia to hold elections, especially local council elections.
It has taken Puntland more than 20 years to hold this election, and several times in the past there have been failures due to security obstacles in the way of holding this election.
The holding of these elections means that Puntland has overcome a major challenge which was to overcome the tribal system that was used to elect local councillors.
