The Somalia’s Deputy Prime Minister of Somalia, Mahdi Mohamed Guled, has issued a statement announcing the timing of the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) ruling in Somalia’s disputed territorial waters.

“Praise be to God, I am pleased to share with the Somali people that the International Court of Justice will rule in the maritime case between Somalia and Kenya on October 12, 2021,” Mahdi Guled said in a statement.

Somalia filed in court on March 15th and 16th 2021. There were no hearings on March 17th after Kenya refused to participate in the court hearing. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) also on March 17, 2021 rejected a request from Kenya to return to the case,  according to the Somali delegation.

The Somali government filed the lawsuit in 2014, during the presidency of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud, after all negotiations between the two sides failed.
