According to Voice of America report. Two members of the US House of Representatives have called on the United States to review its relationship with the Somali federal government and consider imposing sanctions on those who challenge democracy, according to a statement. Press release today.

Congressmen Gregory W. Meeks and Michael McCaul, the chairman and deputy chairman of the House of Representatives’ Foreign Affairs Committee, recently issued this press release.

“I am deeply concerned about the news of Somalia’s elections, especially the law that will extend President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo’s term by two years,” they said in a statement.

“This act undermines the federal system and undermines the quest for democracy and stability in Somalia,” they added.

They said that if the extension continues, the United States will reassess its support and relationship with the Somali federal government, and consider imposing sanctions on those who challenge the democratic process.

They called on the Somali government to resume talks to resolve the crisis and return to the September 17, 2020 election process.

The move comes after Somalia’s lower house of parliament yesterday extended the federal government by two years, a move opposed by the opposition and regional administrations in Puntland and Jubaland.
