The Halla Airlines Boeing 737-200, owned by Somali businessman Ibrahim Hilowle, was spotted landing at Ben Gurion Airport in Israel. It is the first time in history that a Somali plane has landed in Tel Aviv, Israel, with no relations between the two countries.

The owner of the plane told outlet Somali media that the plane landed in Tel Aviv, registered in Kenya and was carrying passengers to Kenya. Ibrahim Hilowle said he had hired his pilot and flown to Israel, passing through other countries such as Nigeria and Egypt.

He said his plane was registered in Kenya, adding that if Somalia was registered it would not be able to fly to Israel.

According to the The Times of Israel reported Somali leader who met Netanyahu returns to power, and some see hope of normalization.

Israel does not have diplomatic relations with the East African nation, which has a population of some 15.44 million. Somalia, a mostly Sunni Muslim country and a member of the Arab League, has never recognized the State of Israel.

In June 2016, a news website operated by journalists opposed to the Somali regime reported that Hsaan Sheikh Mohamoud and three other Somali officials came to Tel Aviv on a short visit and met there with Netanyahu and other Israeli officials. At the time, a senior official close to Mohamoud confirmed to The Times of Israel that the meeting took place, and that another meeting between the two leaders was in the works.

The source said there was also a lower-level official meeting in Jerusalem in December 2015, involving representatives from the Economy Ministry and officials from Somalia.
