The Federal Government of Somalia has announced the security of the country’s upcoming elections to be handed over to the caretaker Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble, according to a statement from the Somali Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the UN Security Council.

The statement said the Prime Minister will lead the commission to work on the upcoming elections in Somalia. The reason for Roble’s security was also stated, in order to resolve security concerns over the country’s elections.

“In order to resolve election security concerns, the government will ensure that the National Electoral Security Commission will be led by the Prime Minister, who will take over the security solution,” said the letter to the UN.

This comes at a time when opposition candidates, the Jubaland and Puntland administrations have already declared that the security of the country’s elections cannot be trusted by the outgoing president, Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed Farmajo.

However, Somalia’s elections have been marred by tensions between the federal government and some regional governments, with recent talks taking place at the Afiysoni Tent in Mogadishu.
