The President of Jubaland, Ahmed Mohamed Islam, has warned that the Somalia statehood is on a dangerous path, the leadership of the Federal Government of Somalia of weakening the federal system and concentrating power in Mogadishu.

Speaking at the opening of the new session of the Jubaland Parliament, Ahmed Islam said that today the Somalia statehood is limited to Mogadishu, while other administrations are being diverted from their constitutional roles.

The President of Jubaland also spoke about the issue of Hargeisa administration, saying that they have the right to seek their own political destiny, but he described them as having taken a long road instead of a path within Somalia. He warned that the current direction could create new national dangers.

Ahmed Islam said that if nothing is done about the way President Hassan Sheikh is governing the country, Puntland and Jubaland may take a path of self-determination, which could distance them from the solution sought in Hargeisa administration.
Also, Ahmed Islam said that the decisions made by the Federal Government of Somalia regarding Somalia’s ports and airspace cannot change the reality on the ground, noting that the federal government has failed to control the country’s airspace, and it will be difficult for it to control Jubaland’s ports.

Finally, the Jubaland President announced that if President Hassan Sheikh does not respond within 20 days, Jubaland will begin its own electoral process, which will not wait for May 15 2026, but will be held before.

This statement comes at a time of increasing political differences between the Federal Government and some of the state governments, which has raised fears that the country is facing a very difficult political stage.
