Al-Shabaab official escapes from Mogadishu’s central prison

At least 15 inmates who tried to escape from Mogadishu prison have lost their lives in clashes with prison guards. About four probation officers were also killed in the fighting in Mogadishu’s central prison.

According to VOA, Mubarak Ibrahim Idle, an al-Shabaab member who escaped, was sentenced in 2014 to 10 years in prison. Mubarak found a gun and killed two security guards outside, before escaping from prison. Mogadishu Central Prison has previously been accused of living in normal conditions, holding telephones, accessing Internet services and some entering live in the same prison.

The escape of the prisoner is attributed to the lack of security in the central prison, and yesterday a heavy attack took place inside the prison, which was carried out by Al-Shabaab prisoners who were armed. The federal government has set up a six-member commission to investigate the attack, which left 19 people dead and seven others injured.
