Djibouti president Guelleh warns against Israeli base construction in Berbera

The President of Djibouti, Ismail Omar Guelleh, spoke out in a recent article in Jeune Afrique about Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, describing the move as a threat to regional stability and the unity of Somalia.

The President of Djibouti also condemned the role of the United Arab Emirates of being the leading supporter of Israel in the region and of being involved in the conflicts in Yemen, Sudan, Somalia, Chad, Libya and elsewhere.

“Relations are cold. Djibouti has refused to meet or call Abdirahman Irro. The border is still open, but flights between Djibouti and Hargeisa have been suspended,” said President Guelleh.

The President of Djibouti, who said that his country does not approve of political unrest in the region, insisted that the philosophy of Somaliland’s leaders for 34 years can be summed up in one statement, “We will not tolerate any form of oppression, even if it is a satanic one.”

Finally, President Guelleh said that Israel’s aim is to exploit Somaliland’s territory for non-peaceful purposes, and indicated that the Somaliland administration is ready to give Netanyahu anything to gain that recognition, and called the establishment of a Jewish base in Berbera an unacceptable move.
