Fighting erupts between Ethiopian forces in Somalia

Reports from the Bardhere town in the Gedo region say that there was a shootout between Ethiopian troops who are part of the African Union Mission in Somalia Amisom.

Several Ethiopian soldiers have been killed in a shootout by Ethiopian troops in the Gedo region

According to sources, the shooting was sparked by a dispute between Ethiopian troops and Amisom, and is rooted in the ongoing conflict in the country between Tigray and Ethiopian Federal Government forces.

The Tigray and Amhara ethnic groups who are currently at loggerheads with each other, were operating from a base inside the town of Bardhere.

Ethiopia warned on Friday that it would deploy “all its defensive powers” after Tigrayan forces advanced into neighboring regions.

“The Somali government will be forced to mobilize and deploy all its national powers if peace and the humanitarian situation are threatened,” the foreign ministry said in a statement.

“The actions of an irresponsible group are testing the federal government’s tolerance and forcing it to change its defensive stance due to a unilateral humanitarian ceasefire,” the statement said.
