The former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Somalia, Ahmed Isse Awad, Kenya-United Arab Emirates informant spoke about how he sees the talks between the presidents of Somalia and Egypt and to discuss the issue of Ethiopia’s dam on the Nile River.

Egypt’s President Abdifatah Al-Sisi made a strong statement after he told a press conference held by President Hassan Sheikh that they share the same view on the danger of the dam if it is managed in a way that is not mutually agreed upon.

“We discussed the situation of the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, and we agreed on the danger of one-sided policies towards international river projects, as well as the necessity to stick to them. The principle of cooperation and consultation between the countries that the river passes through to ensure that none of them are harmed,” said President Sisi.

The former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Somalia, Ahmed Isse Awad, said that there is nothing wrong with Somalia and Egypt discussing issues such as the Nile River.

“It is normal for a friendly country to talk about what is bothering a country. As we all know, this dam that generates electricity by Ethiopia has shown a lot of concern and opposition from Egypt and Sudan, who argue that this action will harm them, because they are the countries where the water falls and not where the rivers come from,” said Awad.

He added that, ”Somalia is not wrong if it talks with Egypt about the issues related to that river, saying that the Egyptians are knocking on every door to reach an agreement with Ethiopia on the dam issue, but the best thing is that both sides spread the fire evenly.”

The Somali government has clarified its position on the Nile River dispute between Ethiopia on the one hand and Egypt and Sudan on the other.

“The position of the Somali government is to use the water of the river peacefully, in accordance with the international rules and international agreements,” said the spokesman of the Somali presidency, Abdikarim Ali Kaar.

So it is being asked if the issue of the Nile River dispute is not discussed, why would the President of Egypt say at the press conference that he and Hassan Sheikh raised the matter together.
