Minnesota Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar has said her assets are not as they appear in documents she previously submitted to the US Congress.

The move comes as she faces a potential financial investigation by President Donald Trump and Republican members of the House of Representatives. Ilhan has blamed significant accounting errors in her previous filings.

Financial records filed by Ilhan last year showed that she and her husband had assets ranging from $6 million to $30 million, a huge increase compared to her previous filings.

The financial scandal has raised concerns among Republicans, who have been seeking an opportunity to investigate the lawmaker, who has been vocally critical of the president.

But new, revised data seen by The Wall Street Journal shows the couple’s net worth is only between $18,004 and $95,000. Congress’s asset disclosure system does not require the disclosure of specific figures, but allows for a range of estimates.

Ilhan’s husband, Tim Mynett, a former political consultant, runs several businesses, including a venture-capital firm based in Washington, D.C., and another in California.

The businesses were previously valued at between $6 million and $30 million. But the new data shows that the businesses are worth nothing when compared to their assets and liabilities.

Ilhan’s aides confirmed that the congresswoman reviewed the form before it was submitted in 2025, but did not immediately notice the error, as she was not involved in the management of her husband’s businesses and had full confidence in the accountant who prepared her husband’s financial statements.

“This corrected record confirms what we have always said: Congresswomen are not millionaires,” said Jacklyn Rogers, a spokeswoman for Ilhan Omar. “The congresswoman voluntarily changed her information as soon as the discrepancy was discovered.”

The new files are also in response to a letter Ilhan received in March from the Office of the Oversight Committee on Congressional Ethics (OCC), an independent agency that reviews allegations of misconduct by members and staff of the House of Representatives.

An attorney representing Ilhan told the office that the error was not intentional. He noted that it is common for busy members of Congress to rely on professional accountants, stressing that there was no illegality involved.

The new data highlights that the income from the assets owned by her and her husband in 2024 is between $102,503 and $1,005,200 dollars. Also, the records show that Ilhan, 43, has between $15,001 and $50,000 in student loans and between $15,001 and $50,000 in credit-card debt.

Lawmakers’ financial records are not new to the US Congress, with a number of members having previously failed to properly document their assets.

President Trump in January suggested that Ilhan may have benefited from the welfare fraud scandal that has rocked her state, noting that the Justice Department is investigating her.

Rep. James Comer, the chairman of the House Oversight Committee, also threatened to subpoena Ilhan’s husband for the theft of their assets.

Ilhan Omar, the most prominent member of the country’s Somali community who is currently under house arrest, responded to the criticism in January by saying that Trump has “a sick obsession and obsession with her and the Somali community.” She added: “For years, he has been calling for investigations into me, and they have found nothing.”

Ilhan’s office confirmed Friday that it had not received any contact from the Justice Department or the Republicans who threatened investigations.

Ilhan, the first Somali-American and one of the first two Muslim women elected to Congress, has often faced verbal attacks from Donald J Trump.

She rose to national political prominence when she became part of a group of young women on the left wing of the Democratic Party known as “The Squad,”
