Defence Agreement between Somalia and Turkey is the best thing President Hassan Sheikh has done yet. It is commendable how it was swiftly passed in the parliament despite the damning presence of more than 200 dual national MPs who ‘report’ back to many western countries who are against the strong, stable and united Somalia.

This agreement that was ratified into law is totally different to the previous defunct agreement with the UAE which was only pigeonholed at the cabinet level. Abiy Ahmed and Musa Bihi’s heedless ambitions for coastline hits a dead end with the Turkey’s inclusion into the fray; they know better to stand in the way of a global naval powerhouse invited into Somalia through a mutual defence pact.

Somalia’s long stretch of over 3000 kilometres has experienced heavy-loads of nuclear waste dump, illegal fishing and untold destruction of marine life from countries as far as Japan and European countries, with this naval agreement it is a good starting point to protect its ocean.
