The Kenyan government has taken retaliatory action after the Somali government recently announced that it was still suspending imports of Mira khat. The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority has announced the suspension of all flights to and from Somalia, except for aid and private jets working with the United Nations.

The agency said the decision would take effect from May 11 to August 9, 2021. Following the issuance of the decision, there was an immediate impact on civilians traveling from Somalia, who were denied entry to Kenya this morning.

Kenya’s decision to suspend flights to Somalia also comes as Somalia’s Civil Aviation Authority’s Monday announcement that mira shipments from Kenya would remain suspended despite the diplomatic breakthrough.
