The United Nations has expressed deep concern over the escalating tensions in the Southwest State administration, calling on Hassan Sheikh and the regional states to resolve their differences through dialogue and avoid any steps that could lead to violence.

A statement issued by the UN Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS) on Saturday said it was closely monitoring the situation in Southwest State, amid the ongoing political conflict between Mogadishu and Baidoa.

“The political differences between Hassan Sheikh and the federal member states must be resolved through dialogue,” the UNTMIS statement said.

The agency added that it was concerned about the impact of the escalating tensions, warning that the situation could harm the stability, security, unity and humanitarian situation in Somalia.
“We call on the parties to engage in constructive dialogue and to refrain from any further steps that could lead to violent conflict,” UNTMIS reiterated.

The UN statement comes as the situation in the South West has entered a new phase, following the snap elections held on Saturday in Baidoa, which re-elected Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Lafta-garen as president.
