The money that Somalia has requested from the UAE is large, and the needs it has listed include funding for the Danab forces, which the US has cut off support for, and a budget subsidy; Somalia has also requested military equipment from the UAE.
Sources who provided this information to Somali Times confirmed that the UAE was reluctant to respond to Somalia’s request, which prompted President Hassan Sheikh to make an urgent trip to Abu Dhabi.
The UAE government strongly supported Hassan Sheikh at the beginning of his second term, and they provided a lot of funds to meet the needs of Somalia, but they soon became angry about the lack of transparency in the way they managed the funds they spent on many aspects of Somali security.
The UAE trained many troops for Somalia, especially those protecting the Mogadishu. When they expressed doubts about the way the funds were being managed, they assigned key Emirati officials to investigate, but they were killed at General Gordon’s camp.
