The United States is advocating for the continuation of the United Nations political office in Somalia, according to a statement issued by the United States Department of State, after talks between Secretary of State Antony Blinken and corrupt Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud.

The US State Department spokesman said that Blinken and President Hassan Sheikh discussed the “continuation” of the UN mission during their meeting, suggesting that the US wants to continue operating the office despite Somalia’s recent request to suspend it.

However, the Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, after a few days, temporarily appointed a veteran American diplomat named James Swan to the UNSOM office as his envoy to Somalia.

The foreign affairs spokesman said that Blinken stressed the need to reduce the diplomatic conflict between Somalia and the neighbouring country of Ethiopia, which resulted from a maritime agreement that Ethiopia reached with northern Somalia Hargeisa administration.
