Former security advisor to Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed claims asylum in Belgium

The former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia, who was later the National Security Adviser to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, Gedu Andargachew, is reported to have secretly defected to Belgium, reports say that Gedu had to use Diplomatic passport.

Last month, it was reported that Gedu has been under house arrest since he defied the state of emergency imposed in Ethiopia’s Amhara region in August 2023.

He spoke passionately in the Ethiopian Parliament in August 2023 when he was explaining why military action in the Amhara region did not solve the problem in his region.

Initially, Abiy Ahmed’s government planned to end military operations in the region, reportedly, within two weeks. However, the six-month state of emergency expired before the government achieved its stated goal.

“Proudly, disarmament and peace have not been restored after six months. Last Friday, the Ethiopian parliament extended the state of emergency for another four months.

Gedu Andargachew has been president from the Amhara region of Ethiopia for a long time. He was also an influential member of the group that made it possible for Abiy Ahmed to seize government power through hidden political manoeuvres within the collapsed Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front.
