Somalia corrupt lawmakers to consider extending presidential term

The Lower House Parliament’s First Deputy Speaker, MP Sadia Yasin Samatar, has appointed a 10-member committee to deliberate on a motion submitted by nearly 100 MPs advocating for amendments and supplements to the constitution.

This motion, according to Somali Times, is about making the term of office of the parliament five years, so that the current parliament and its government get one year of extension.

The first deputy chairman of the parliament has until the seventh of March for this committee to submit their recommendations, to be included in the general agenda of the parliament.

Member of Parliament Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame, told the parliamentary committee that they were expected to submit agendas on how to withdraw from indirect elections.

He said that this is not the time for parliament to think about an extension period. He said that the parliament is aware of the problems and difficulties that have been experienced for a long time.

In 2021, the Lower House of Parliament voted to extend the mandate of former President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed Farmajo and the federal government by two years to end a political stalemate over Somalia national elections.

However, opposition candidates, led by current corrupt president Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud and former President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, successfully pushed the parliament to abandon the mandate term extensions.

On Thursday, the Somali Cabinet Council approved a five-person committee tasked with the Independent Commission for the Review of the Federal Constitution, which is a loophole.
