Somalia Southwest state announces Electoral Commission

The President of the Southwest State of Somalia, Abdiasis Hassan Mohamed Laftagaren, has issued a formal decree appointing the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission for the administration, according to a letter from the Office of the President.

The decree, dated March 23, 2026, appointed the members of the commission, which consists of a chairman, deputy chairman, secretary and other members, who are expected to play a key role in the preparation and implementation of the elections in the Southwest State of Somalia.

This appointment has already received political support from some members of the Somali Federal Parliament who support the administration.

Former Speaker of the House of the People Mohamed Mursal Sheikh Abdirahman is among the officials who have openly welcomed the decision, saying that the establishment of the commission is “a legitimate and important step towards the implementation of transparent elections in the areas of the Southwest State.”

Similarly, other members of the Federal Parliament expressed their support, noting that this new committee will contribute to political stability and unifying public opinion regarding the elections.
