Ethiopia tries to deny the Somalia delegation African Union summit

The Federal Government of Somalia said Ethiopia made a “provocative attempt” to disrupt the Somalia President’s delegation to the African Union (AU) summit in Addis Ababa.

A press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Government of Somalia strongly condemned the alleged act, and described it as a violation of the diplomatic protocol and African Union practices.

The press release did not mention the nature of the protest, but it was emphasized that Ethiopia, as the host country of the African Union headquarters, must treat all African leaders with equality and respect.

“Hosting the African Union is both an honour and a privilege for Ethiopia, the statement said. However, if its government fails to honour this responsibility, it may be necessary for the African Union to re-evaluate the location of its headquarters,” the Somalia Government press release stated.

Somalia also urged the African Union to conduct a credible and independent investigation into the matter, in accordance with the organization’s protocol.

So far, there has been no official response from Ethiopia and the African Union related to these allegations.

This issue coincided with the strengthening of the tension between Somalia and Ethiopia, especially regarding the dispute between Ethiopia and Hargeisa administration, which is part of the republic.
