Egypt and Eritrea will ensure that Somalia’s independence is not threatened




The President of Egypt, Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, met with his Eritrean counterpart, Isaias Afwerki, as they discussed the independence of Somalia and the stability of the region.

The leaders of the two countries, during their official meeting, underlined the urgent need to respect the independence of Somalia, pointing out that it is a pillar of peace in the Horn of Africa.

The meeting noted that Egypt and Eritrea are committed to strengthening bilateral relations in the fields of economy, trade, and security.

However, the independence of Somalia was an important point, as both President El-Sisi and Afwerki understood the importance of supporting Somalia in order to prevent anything that harms its sovereignty.




Egypt and Eritrea underline their commitment to play an effective role in peace and stability in the Horn of Africa region.

The conflict in the Horn of Africa escalated after Somaliland agreed in January to lease 20 km of coastline for 50 years from Addis Ababa, which wants to establish a military base and commercial port.

The Somali government strongly opposed the agreement, calling it a violation of Somalia’s existence.

The government said it will resist Ethiopia’s attempt to take part of Somalia’s sea.
