The chairman of Somalia’s Indirect Electoral Commission, Mohamed Hassan Irro, spoke for the first time about the crisis in the Gedo region and the position of the electoral commission on who will administer the elections in Garbaharey.

Chairman of the Electoral Commission Mohamed Hassan Irro said the issue in Gedo is a political one above them and the federal government and the Jubaland administration need to reach a comprehensive solution before the election.

“As a committee, we welcome Ahmed Madobe’s recommendations, but in the case of Gedo, I can tell you that it is a matter for our committee to come to an agreement and tell us where the election will take place,” said Irro. He said the committee was ready to listen to President Ahmed Madobe’s complaints against their committee and would consider his elders’ recommendations.

“The electoral agreement we have states that Ahmed Madobe is responsible for the elections in Gedo and Jubaland in general, but we are not in a position to resolve the current political crisis in Gedo.

The Gedo region is currently under the control of the Federal Government of Somalia. The Jubaland president is demanding his reinstatement to run for parliament.
