The meeting of the National Consultative Council opened today in Mogadishu, and its agenda contains preliminary information about the items on the table that are expected to be discussed by the leaders of the federal and regional governments.

The reports that are coming out say that it is possible to agree to extend another period of time for the heads of the regional governments until November 2025.

Hassan Sheikh is said to be intending that after the extension period, elections will be held in the regional governments by person and vote, while the election will be conducted by an election committee appointed by the Ministry of Interior of the federal government.

The agenda of this meeting, which has not been mentioned, but which the Presidency is conducting, is to approve the establishment of a national committee that will conduct the country’s elections, by dissolving the election committees of the states.
It is also planned to support the revision of the country’s constitution by the members of the Somali parliament and to approve the previously agreed provisions that stated that public elections should be held.
It is not known how it will be possible, and the people and the politicians who are seeking office will be convinced to stay in power for the leaders of the states who have been in the seat for a long time and have already done several times of extension.
The former Prime Minister of Somalia, Hassan Ali Khaire, who issued a statement at the meeting of the National Consultative Council, said, “I call on the leaders of the Federal Government and the Regional Governments to take responsibility for the rescue of the country, put the public interest before their own interests, and avoid a period of escalation that creates further conflict, instability, and political uncertainty, and further undermines the unity and solidarity of our country and our people.”
Hassan Khaire said that the rule of law is the ‘spirit of government’ and he mentions the country’s constitution and official election boxes.
“We have enough experience with the consequences of an illegal extension period, which is a threat to the process of governance, national unity, stability of the country and national security,” said Khaire.
The former Prime Minister of Somalia said that the only way open to the country and the Somali government today is to avoid a period of pre-growth, to hold the elections of the Regional Governments that have expired, and to agree on the Federal elections, in order to elect A general consensus is reached in the country on May 15, 2026.
